The Lap Band, or adjustable gastric band, is a common weight loss surgery in which a silicone band is placed round the upper portion of the stomach. This creates a small pouch which food travels through slowly. Because of this, patients eat a smaller volume of food, feel full more quickly, and generally feel less hungry. The Lap Band is adjusted at regular follow-up visits, so the patient can achieve an optimum level of ‘tightness’ of the band.
The Lap Band is FDA approved for patients with a BMI of 35 or higher, or patients with a BMI of 30 – 34 if they also have a health condition related to their weight, such as sleep apnea, diabetes, or high blood pressure.
